Henare Brooking. Te Amokura, the Indigenous jersey 2022 is a strong symbol of our connection. It will be worn in round 12 against the Newcastle Knights on Saturday 28th May, to celebrate the NRL Indigenous Round. Te Amokura’s jersey takes its inspiration from the same bird. The Amokura is well-known in the Pacific, Australia, and Aotearoa. The Amokura was instrumental to the discovery of the world’s largest body of water by great navigators. It is most well-known for its distinctive red elongated tail wings. These are highly prized by Te moana Ni a Kiwa chiefs. On the jersey’s rear, two red stripes are visible. These colours are not only symbolic of the club’s journey and identity but also represent the sacrifices made by players and staff to leave behind family, friends and supporters. Blue is mana Maua. The Pacific ocean is the link between Aotearoa and Australia. This ocean carries our collective whakapapa. Green represents mana whenua. Aotearoa, the land which recognizes Australia to be the true home for the Warriors, is called Aotearoa. Our Aboriginal whanaunga. These are the original peoples of Australia that have welcomed the Warriors in the past three seasons. Red represents mana tangata. The people act as the link between players, present and future. They move onto the battlefield and the whakapapa between them all is interwoven. The black symbolizes Te Po, which is a place where learning and development can be achieved. White symbolizes Te Ao where expression is possible. The jersey functions as a Korowai, which is a cloak that covers a wearer. It is not just a jersey, it is also a symbol of the wearer’s personal journey. It is a symbol for our cultural identity, as well as the connection we share with Indigenous peoples around the globe. This jersey is the exact same as what Indigenous round participants wear.
